There is a small bug when (Edit 2) selecting the wallpaper but it can be worked around by using the Shield Remote app and the Touchpad feature which will then allow you to mouse around. I've paired this with Launcher Manager (Edit 2) which automates Method 2 in the gitlab link above. So far, it's extremely easy to setup and similar to one of the Leanback (Fire) options.
